We held a contest back in October of 2011 where we offered to make a custom ringtone for four people that helped us spread the word about Detonator on Twitter and Facebook.
It took a bit longer than we anticipated to make musical magic. As we’ve said before, genius cannot be scheduled. Regardless, these mofos are bangin’! Actually, it would probably be more fitting for us to refer to these ringtones as “the bomb.”
James, Cortney, Curtis, and Rick…thank you for supporting Detonator. May these humble ringtones delight your ears and the ears of those around you every time you receive a call.
We hope that our efforts are worthy of following in the grand tradition of the “Crazy Calls” messages from the 1980’s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA9Rfrj74Rg
Friday Jams: Episode 4
Today you’re in for a gritty, nasty, funky morning snack. We’re proud to bring you “Compared to What,” a remake of the classic cut from the 1969 album Swiss Movement by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. The original was fantastic, but this version by John Legend and The Roots cranks the funkiness up a few levels. Owen Biddle’s complex bass line weaves and percolates all around the tight drum groove laid down by Questlove Thompson. And we love the way John Legend just lays back slightly from the pulse of the groove.
This one will get your weekend mojo off to a good start. And hey, let’s be careful out there.
If you’ve watched any of our videos, read any of our blog posts, or looked at our web site you’d see that we spend a lot of time talking about why Detonator exists. You’d also learn a lot about who Chris and I are as people.
You’d also notice a disproportionate number of Cameo mentions, but that’s beside the point.
The reason we spend so much time on “why” is because it’s the essential foundation for creating an authentic relationship with people. Marketing is the sum total of everything you do as a company, and it all has to line up with “why” you do what you do and with with “who” you are as an organization otherwise people won’t buy your marketing messages, or the products you’re selling for that matter. No relationship, business or otherwise, lasts if it isn’t authentic.
That’s why we thought this video from 1997 was so cool…because Steve Jobs backs us up. In the video he says, ”To me, marketing is about values. This is a very complicated world, a very noisy world and we’re not going to get the chance to get people to remember us. No company is. So we have to be very clear about what we want people to know about us.”
He then goes on to introduce the original “Think Different” ad, which does an amazing job of communicating “why” Apple does what it does. Know why your company’s in business, and know who you are as an organization. Advice as relevant today as it was back in 1997. It’s what we try to remember every day. Enjoy.
Friday jams, number 3 yo! Today we strut into the world of remixes. Specifically a really GOOD remix that’s arguably more interesting than the original version of the song that it pays homage to. Just in time for your lunch break, we bring you Jamie Woon’s sonically lush remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Video Game.” Enjoy the awesome altered-vocal baseline y’all.
Warning. This one is addictive.
PACT (wearpact.com) is a company that we really respect. We’re so excited about their “Recycling Kit” that we just had to tell you about it. Proof that a business can be so much more than expected.

Man, do we love good designers. Their work lures you in by the eyes and then, when you’re not expecting it, hits you straight in the chest, tugging at your heart. They’re emotional magicians. That’s the true power of good design.
As we close in on the launch of our inaugural collection of explosive tees, we thought this would be a great time to introduce you to some of the extraordinary designers we’ve enlisted to help us tear the roof off the mutha sucka (tear the roof off the sucka). We place immense value on design at Detonator, so it’s only appropriate that we give massive fanfare to all of our design collaborators.
Sometimes the best ideas strike while you’re enjoying an approachable gueze. And sometimes you get ideas like this one instead. We humbly present to you the “Let’s Be Honest” button.
Friday jams, number 2. Today we bring you an extended Herbie Hancock classic. Seven minutes and thirty-one seconds of pure 70’s funk. Channel your inner Frank Poncherello and mount up for “Hang Up Your Hang Ups.”
PLEASE NOTE: We’re not responsible for any hip displacements that result from any serious attempts to perform the “Hitch Hike.”
